Amy Lynn’s Story

A First Generation Homeschooled Student

Amy Lynn’s formative years as a homeschooled student came in the 1990’s. Homeschooling had just become legal in Iowa, and the homeschooling movement was just beginning. Her parents courageously chose to pursue homeschooling despite sideways glances from people ranging from grocery clerks to extended family members.

Thanks to this, and particularly her mom’s persistence, Amy Lynn enjoyed an academic education custom-tailored to her personal needs, interests, and challenges. She flourished in her studies despite being quite “late” to read fluently, at least by conventional standards. She also enjoyed plenty of time for free play and the outdoors, and later the flexibility to pursue her passion for classical ballet.

Second Generation Homeschooler

Amy Lynn initially pursued a career as a “ballerina,” first in ballet performance, and later in arts administration. During this time, she assumed she might choose a more conventional schooling option for her own future children. But when her first daughter, and then her second were born, and after evaluating the educational options available, Amy Lynn had a change of heart.

The public school system in their community was not a place where Amy Lynn and her husband felt comfortable sending their children. Moreover, Amy Lynn would need to attain a higher-paying job in order to afford a private school education. And simply put, Amy Lynn just wanted to spend time with her kids.

After spending over eight years building a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, Amy Lynn became a stay-at-home mom and a second-generation homeschooler. She loves not only homeschooling her own children, but encouraging others on the journey of homeschooling.

As a second-generation homeschool mom, Amy Lynn uses her childhood experiences as a springboard for developing her own homeschooling methods. Her successful homeschooling journey as a student also provides an overarching sense of confidence that, though things might feel messy in the day-to-day moments of homeschooling, it all works out in the end.
